HOW TO GET TO THE LODGE

If coming from Santiago de Chile (capital city of Chile), it is necessary to take a commercial plane to Coyhaique and to then travel by ground from there to the lodge (about 4 hours).  It is also possible to fly from Santiago de Chile to Port Montt and to then fly a private plane to Lago Verde (Green Lake).  Upon arriving at that destination, the lodge is 15 minutes away by ground.  Alternatively, it is also possible to fly to La Junta and to then travel by ground to the lodge (approximately one hour away).

From Buenos Aires, Argentina, it is necessary to fly a commercial flight to Esquel and to then travel by ground from there to the lodge (4 hours).

The entrance to Alegría Lodge is through a gravel road that extends from West to East.  This route connects the Town of La Junta that is located on the Austral Highway, with the town of Lago Verde that is located just 5 km from the Argentinean frontier.  This route offers four viewing stops where one can look over the impressive mountain vegetation and twists and turns of the Figueroa River.  The route is in excellent shape and is easy to drive throughout the year without needing a four by four or other rough terrain vehicle.

FAUNA AND FLORA

The vegetation in the valley is abundant; it is called a “cold forest,” and “evergreen forest.”  It is made up of a dense and rich vegetation of multiple species that can be subdivided into three layers: arboreal, subforest, and herbaceous. The arboreal layer, which is the most abundant, is made up of perennial species like the coigües, (Nothofagus Donbeyi, Nothofagus Betuloides), canelo, tepa, tineo, among others.  The subforest is made up of arborescent species like the Lingue (Persea Ligue), Arrayan tree (Myrceugenella apiculata ), and other bushes like the quila (Chusquea Quila), the chilco (Magellan Fuchsia) and the giant nalca plants.  As one heads up the sides of the valley, there are lenga (Nothofagus Pumilio), nire (Antarctic Nothofagus) and coigüe forests.

The fauna is also rich, including more than 60 varieties of mammals such as cougars (pumas), deer, hippocamelus (Chilean deer huemul), wild boar and more than 180 different types of birds.  The rivers and lakes are abounding in trout and pacific salmon.
